Historic Waterfront Gateway City

The city of Sanford, situated on the southern shore of Lake Monroe, is named for Henry Shelton Sanford, who bought over 12,000 acres of land with the vision of creating a city as a trade gateway to southern Florida. It is one of Florida’s oldest incorporated cities.

The city is well-known for its brick lined streets, towering oaks, elegant store-fronts and large, nineteenth-century Victorian homes.

Working In Sanford

In 2012, the city launched the “Imagine Sanford” initiative, which asks all Sanford residents to get involved in city planning by submitting and voting on improvement ideas via the city’s Imagine Sanford website. The city of Sanford also launched a redesigned city government website in 2012.

As the Seminole County seat, Sanford’s largest employer is the county itself – especially since many residents still work in Orlando. However, local business is beginning to grow, and large companies such as Deloitte and Alorica maintain strong presences there.

Sanford’s Zoo and Botanical Gardens, in addition to being a thriving tourist attraction, is also a major local employer.

Getting There – And Staying There

Served by Interstate 4, Sanford is often overshadowed by neighboring Orlando, with which it shares an airport, but is rapidly emerging as a destination unto itself.

Picturesque First Street, the center of downtown Sanford, is a vibrant, enticing destination. Our historic downtown showcases many unique shops, restaurants, art galleries an historic theater and a burgeoning micro-brewery and craft cocktail scene. Events, such as the Saturday morning Farmers Market, theatrical productions at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, and the monthly Alive After 5 street parties attract visitors from all over the Central Florida region.

RiverWalk, with its gazebos and swinging benches, has several miles of pedestrian walking paths. Along the way, you can visit Veterans Memorial Park, Marina Island, Ft. Mellon Park, the Sanford Museum, or dock your boat at our free marina day slips and have a great time in downtown.
